Weekday と Weekend – 平日・週末の英語表現・使い方

weekday （平日の１日）、work week （月～金）、weekend （土・日）を使い分けるのは意外と難しいもの。　各単語意味や用法を復習しながら整理しましょう。

１ weekday の基本的な使い方
weekday は平日を意味します。 – Weekdays are the days from Monday to Friday

a weekday は平日の１日を意味します(24時間）

□ weekday 平日
ex) We’ll have a party on a weekday.
平日の（ある一日）にパーティーを催します

weekday /ˈwiːkˌdeɪ/: any day of the week except Saturday and Sunday
ex) The library is open on weekdays from 9:00 to 5:00.

２ weekdays の基本的な使い方
weekdays は平日の２～５日を意味します

ex) I work on weekdays.
平日（月～金）働きます

月～金の営業時間、就業時間など仕事に関する話の時は
work week (月～金の５日）も weekdays と同様に使えます。

□ work week （米）１週間の労働時間
ex) I have a 4-day work week.
週４日の勤務で働いている

ex) I have a 30-hour work week.
週30時間の勤務で　働いている

workweek /ˈwɚkˌwiːk/: the total amount of hours or days that you spend working at a job in one week
ex) I have a 5-day/40-hour workweek.

□ the day after next 翌々日、明後日
ex) The meeting is to be held the day after next.
会議は明後日に開催される予定である

ex) We’ll meet the week after next.
再来週会いましょう

ex) When it is May, the month after next is July.
５月の翌々月は７月だ

after next: in expressions such as the week after next to refer to a period of time after the next one
ex) We can squeeze you in the week after next.

３ work weeks (= weekdays) の基本的な使い方

work weeks は week + s で平日（何週でも）いつも

複数の s を取り the をつけ the work week にすると、特定の平日（月～金）になります。

□ workweeks　　平日
ex) I don’t have time to watch TV during work weeks.
平日（月～金に仕事がある）は（いつも）テレビを見る時間がありません

ex) I don’t have time to watch TV during the work week.
（特定のある１週間の）平日はテレビを見る時間がありません

work week （米） = working day （英）
Working day は　月曜～金曜日の５日を指します – Working days excludes public holidays.

ex) I’ll meet him at the first working day of the year.
新年営業開始日に彼と会います

ex) Deliveries take up to 2-3 working days after you place your order (excludes Weekends & Bank Holidays).
配達は注文した日から平日営業日内で 2-3日かかります
